Greenwich Council’s latest car park sale has netted more than a million pounds after 30 spaces in Blackheath went under the hammer.
Former tram shelters in Eltham and old toilets in Greenwich also found buyers in the sale of council assets.
The car park, on Old Dover Road, sold for £1,155,000 at the online auction at Strettons on Thursday – more than twice the reserve price of £500,000. It had originally been listed for sale in December, but was withdrawn because of an issue with the electric chargers installed in the car park.
Greenwich Council said that the car park, next to one of the borough’s best-known shopping areas, was little-used, but this was hotly disputed by a number of traders.
The identity of the buyer is not known. Of the two other council car parks to have been sold so far, Abery Street in Plumstead, which went for £1.4 million, remains in use while one of the car parks at Charlton Village has been fenced off.
The council’s cabinet approved plans to sell the car parks and other assets in October 2024 as part of a £33 million package of cuts. Last year Matt Hartley, then the leader of the council’s Conservative group, branded it a “fire sale” and said the plan “may be one of the shortest-sighted decisions we have yet seen”.
Less controversially, old tram shelters in Eltham that had formerly been used as public toilets also went under the hammer.
One sold for £71,000, the smallest went for £43,000 and the other fetched £127,000: well in excess of their guide prices. All three buildings are at least 100 years old and have been out of use for some years.
A former public toilet in Rodmere Street, Greenwich, went for £426,000, more than twice the guide price of £175,000.
