There will be another Sunday closure of the southbound Blackwall Tunnel this month, as work continues to finish the new Silvertown Tunnel, which is due to open next year.

Drivers will be diverted away from the crossing between 11pm on Saturday November 16 and 5am on Monday November 18.

Northbound traffic will be able to use the Blackwall Tunnel as normal, but drivers heading southbound are being asked to plan their journeys in advance.

Bus passengers will suffer disruption all weekend, with route 108 split in two on both Saturday November 16 and Sunday November 17, with buses running from Lewisham to North Greenwich and Canning Town to Stratford International. Bus travellers will be able to use the Jubilee Line between North Greenwich and Canning Town without charge.

In the early hours of Monday morning, the buses will run via Tower Bridge instead. TfL has previously said that the additional bus disruption is caused by needing to change drivers’ shift patterns.

Passengers on the 108 will face a whole weekend of disruption.

The southbound tunnel will also be closed overnight this Friday between 11pm and 6am on Saturday morning. A further closure will also take place on Friday November 15. Drivers will face diversions, but buses will run a near-normal service as they will be escorted through the tunnel.

The Sunday disruption will come on the same weekend as the Elizabeth Line is closed between Paddington and Abbey Wood, while there will also be no Southeastern or Thameslink trains through Greenwich or Woolwich that day.

The £2 billion Silvertown Tunnel is set to open in the spring. There have been long-standing plans to toll both the new crossing and the Blackwall Tunnel to pay off the construction costs, with car drivers expected to pay up to £4 at peak times and £1.50 off-peak. TfL will make a final decision next month.

Newly-built roads leading into the Silvertown Tunnel have now been laid with tarmac, and work is continuing on other aspects of the project.

These include a noise barrier south of the river alongside the A102 Westcombe Hill, Siebert Road and Invicta Road, which was introduced after residents lobbied at the public inquiry into the tunnel in 2016.

North of the Thames, work is also taking place at the Bow Roundabout to accommodate changes to traffic flows. No physical changes to roads south of the river are being planned, with changes to traffic signals taking place instead.

Updated on November 12 to include the closure on Friday November 15.
