A public consultation has begun on detailed plans for a two-way cycle route through Greenwich town centre.
The route, to the north of Greenwich Market, was approved by council leader Anthony Okereke in October last year, and this formal consultation is the last step before it can go ahead.
Riders heading towards Deptford will be encouraged to cycle from Cutty Sark Gardens, along College Approach, right into Greenwich Church Street then left into Welland Street, Thames Street and left into Norway Street before joining the existing Cycleway 4 at Creek Road.
Space on College Approach used for waiting and loading will be given over for the new segregated lane; while two play spaces on the Meridian Estate will be combined into one between Welland Street and Thames Street as part of the proposals.
Greenwich Council hopes the lane will plug a gap in Cycleway 4, which runs between London Bridge and Charlton, and is currently being extended to Woolwich. Last year it predicted 1,300 cyclists a day would use the lane.
This scheme directs cyclists to and from Cutty Sark Gardens rather than College Way, the route through the Old Royal Naval College that was signed as a cycle route during the pandemic; since then both the council and the college’s management have rowed back on it being an official route.
Instead, cyclists are expected to use a path to the route to the north of the campus that is also a shared footpath. Both ways through the college are closed at night.
The consultation is open until November 25 and is on the Greenwich Council website.
Last week Greenwich Council confirmed it would go ahead plans for a cycle route between Greenwich Park and Elverson Road DLR station; Lewisham Council has its own plans to continue the route for the short distance to Lewisham town centre.
