Heavy goods vehicles could be banned from part of Blackheath Village after years of requests from local residents.

Lewisham Council is consulting on barring vehicles over 7.5 tonnes from using the southern part of Tranquil Vale, Blackheath Village and the northern part of Lee Road as a through route.

Deliveries would still be allowed and the ban would not cover the one-way system at the north end of the village. Cameras would be used to enforce the restriction.

The Blackheath Society said in an email to its members that it had been campaigning for many years on the issue.

“Our principal concern at this point is that HGV drivers be given the maximum possible advance warning of the restriction – a lesson from the Greenwich LTN ongoing trial,” it said.

HGVs have been banned from using Greenwich town centre for nearly 30 years after concerns about pollution and congestion, but lorries have still been able to use Blackheath Village.

The original Greenwich ban caused controversy at the time, with Lewisham taking the issue to a public inquiry because it believed its residents would suffer as a result of the restriction.

However, the inquiry found in favour of Greenwich and the ban has lasted to this day.A public consultation is running until June 5: details of how to respond are in a public notice issued by the council, while a map is also available.
