Greenwich Park will be closed on Saturday after a yellow weather warning for high winds was issued for the London area by the Met Office.

Gusts of over 50mph have been forecast, with the worst of the winds expected in the morning.

Royal Parks, the charity that runs Greenwich Park, announced on Friday evening that it was closing all its parks on Saturday due to “severe wind gusts”. There will also be a later opening on Sunday so safety checks can be carried out.

Other parks affected include Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, St James’s Park, Bushy Park and Richmond Park.

“The safety of visitors and staff is our top priority,” Royal Parks said, advising park users to check social media for updates. “We’re sorry for any inconvenience that these closures may cause.”

Parkruns on the Thames Path at Woolwich and Sutcliffe Park have also been cancelled, with other events advising runners to check social media before setting out.

The worst of the wind is set to be felt across parts of southwest England, including Bristol, Bath, Somerset and Devon, and south, west and northwest Wales, where red alerts have been issued, with three million people sent emergency notifications to their phones.
