The southbound Blackwall Tunnel will be closed all day on Sunday September 22 as work on the adjacent Silvertown Tunnel continues, but there will be disruption for bus passengers all weekend.
Traffic will be diverted away from the southbound tunnel between 11pm on Saturday September 21 and 5am on Monday September 23 to allow for carriageway works. Northbound traffic will be unaffected.
Passengers on bus route 108 will face disruption all weekend, with the service split into two services in both directions on the Saturday and Sunday.
Services will run from Lewisham to North Greenwich and Canning Town to Stratford International, and passengers will be able to use the Jubilee Line without charge to cross the river. In the early hours of the Monday morning, buses will run via Tower Bridge instead.
Transport for London said the additional bus disruption was because of the way drivers’ shifts were rostered.
The Blackwall Tunnel closure will be the second disruption to cross-river links serving the Greenwich area on September 22, with Thameslink services not running through central London that day.
TfL said that additional closures of the southbound Blackwall Tunnel would take place on Friday October 11 and Friday October 18, between 11pm and 5am.
In July TfL confirmed its plans for tolling the Blackwall Tunnel and Silvertown Tunnel, to be introduced when the new crossing opens next year, with charges of up to £4 for rush-hour car and light van drivers. Final charging levels will be confirmed later this year.
Tolls have been part of the plan for the controversial tunnel between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks since it was first planned more than a decade ago.
