Candidates to be MP for Greenwich & Woolwich in the general election will face questions from voters next Tuesday night – but will be facing competition from what could be a vital England match in Euro 2024.
The Blackheath & Greenwich United Nations Association, which has held general election hustings for many years, is behind the event on June 25 at Mycenae House in Mycenae Road, Blackheath.
Organisers are asking people to arrive at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. “Please come early to submit your question,” organisers have asked.
Those who love both football and politics may face a difficult choice, though, with the political clash being on the same evening as England’s final Group C match in the European Championships, against Slovenia. However, the timing of the hustings should enable fans to catch the second half.

The Blackheath & Greenwich United Nations Association has recently led on campaigns to support refugees, including setting up the Lewisham Refugee Network and the Greenwich Social Network, which aims to help refugees settle into the community.
There are eight candidates for the Greenwich & Woolwich constituency, which is slightly smaller than it was in 2019 after boundary changes, with parts of West Thamesmead and Plumstead moving into Erith & Thamesmead.
Labour’s Matt Pennycook won at the last election with 56.8 per cent of the vote.
The candidates are: Chris Annous (Lib Dem), Priyank Bakshi (Climate Party), Jonathan Goff (Conservatove), Abdoul Ndiaye (Reform UK), Niko Omlilana (Independent), Matt Pennycook (Labour), Sheikh Raquib (Workers Party) and Stacy Smith (Green).
If you are aware of other hustings in Greenwich & Woolwich, Eltham & Chislehurst and Erith & Thamesmead, please let us know.
