Greenwich borough’s longest-running community festival is preparing to return next month – but it needs locals to step up and volunteer for the event.

The Plumstead Make Merry, which has run most years since 1975, will take place again on Saturday June 8 after taking a break last year.

Thousands normally attend the festival, which will run from noon until 6pm on Plumstead Common, which features live music, street food, dance performances, arts and crafts, ice cream, community stalls and family activities.

One of the highlights will be the Crossways Gymnastics Centre, which will have 25-30 gymnasts showing off their skills throughout the afternoon.

But the team behind the Make Merry are still looking for help setting up and taking down the festival, or for those who can spend a couple of hours helping visitors.

“People normally can’t quite believe this, but we need 50 volunteers on the day alone to keep the festival running smoothly,” Dario Cracco, one of the organisers, told The Greenwich Wire

“We’re seeking enthusiastic individuals who can help with various aspects of the event, such as setting up and packing down, stewarding throughout the day, and assisting with performer and stall management.

“It’s a great way to meet new people, contribute to our community, and enjoy the festival from behind the scenes. Volunteers can also help just for two hours and then they can enjoy the rest of the festival too.”

Anyone who can spare a couple of hours to help out can email info[at]plumsteadmakemerry.co.uk to get in touch with the team.
