New pedestrian crossings will be installed at one of Greenwich’s busiest junctions after years of campaigning from locals.
Pelican crossings will be placed at the junction of Blackheath Hill with Lewisham Road, outside the George and Dragon pub, as well as across the slip road from Greenwich South Street.
At present, pedestrians have to take their chances by judging the traffic as there is no light-controlled crossing.
A consultation conducted last year found that 89 per cent of respondents believed the junction was dangerous and 91 per cent believed the changes would make travelling through the junction safer for pedestrians.

Work is due to start later this year. As part of the plans, traffic will permanently banned from turning right from Lewisham Road into Blackheath Hill.
Only the one arm of the junction, close to the Greenwich-Lewisham borough border, will be given a crossing. TfL said last year that adding a crossing to all four arms would “would result in disproportionate delays to traffic”.
Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling commissioner, said: “These plans will make this key junction safer for pedestrians and are an important step towards reaching our goal of eliminating death and serious injury from London’s roads.”
Penny Rees, the head of TfL’s healthy streets delivery, said: “It is vital that we continue to take action to help all road users to use our network safely and these changes will play an important role in both reducing road danger and improving safety for pedestrians at this busy location. We’d like to thank the local community for their input and patience during this process.”
