We first asked you to chip in to this website’s running costs six years ago. Thanks to you, The Greenwich Wire has gone from strength to strength. But now we’d like you to switch to a new payment system – one you’ll find simpler to use, and which will bring you more in the future. Editor DARRYL CHAMBERLAIN explains why.

Thanks for reading The Greenwich Wire, and a particular thanks to those of you who help us keep going by giving us a little bit of cash each month. You’re keeping the flame of original journalism burning in our bit of SE London (and, frankly, keeping me in a part-time job to do it), so thank you.

We relaunched as The Greenwich Wire six months ago and the reaction has been fantastic. I’m immensely proud that more than 170 people choose to hand over a little bit of their hard-earned cash each month — it shows there’s a desire to support local reporting in our part of SE London.

The new name is part of a wider project to make the site better for you, as a reader, and more sustainable as a business.

One weakness we’ve had has been using four different systems for regular payments – Steady, PressPatron, Patreon and, for one-offs, Ko-fi. I can’t offer support for those systems and it’s harder to offer things like newsletters when split across different services.

All this changes today. We’ve brought it in-house. You won’t need to click away from the site, because the sign-up box is now on every page. A few people have used it already – thank you ever so much.

One bonus with the new system – no more VAT, which some of our payment systems were charging you for their services. So you can save money (or even donate what you’ve saved if you’re feeling generous).

Your contribution is appreciated.

All you need to do is to select your donation amount, then follow the prompts. It’s that simple. And you’ll be given an account page on The Greenwich Wire from where you can amend your payments if need be. (Don’t forget to cancel with the old system while you’re at it.)

We’ll still be on Steady, PressPatron and Patreon for the time being, and I’ll be writing to everyone on those services soon to let them know what’s happening. But the aim is to eventually move everyone off. (Steady and PressPatron have been brilliant for us and I’m grateful for their help over the years, by the way.)

That said, we’ll be closing our Ko-fi account soon. If you’d like to make a one-off payment, you can do it through the new system without the risk of clicking the wrong button and giving a percentage to PayPal, which isn’t ideal but happens rather a lot.

We’ll hopefully have some more new stuff to come this year, and we’ll keep trying to give you the best and most informed reporting around — powered by your monthly contributions through our new system.

For now though, thanks once again for your support.
