The JD Wetherspoon pub chain is coming to the O2 in Greenwich – with plans to open a bar with a riverside beer garden next year.

The Stargazer, which will be located next to the Mamma Mia! The Party attraction, is due to open in February. Wetherspoon says it will create 70 jobs.

It will also feature a 3,800 sq ft beer garden with views across the Thames to Canary Wharf.

Tim Martin, Wetherspoon’s chairman, said: “We are delighted to be opening a pub at The O2. We believe it will prove popular with customers of all ages.”

The O2’s Janine Constantin-Russell said: “Like The O2, Wetherspoon is a household name, and we’re absolutely thrilled that they are joining our diverse line-up of bars and restaurants.

“We are proud to celebrate both national and independent brands here at The O2, and look forward to The Stargazer opening in what will be an exceptionally strong year at the destination, with a fantastic line-up of events plus more dining, shopping, and leisure options than ever before.”

The news – first reported in the Morning Advertiser pub trade newspaper – comes a few weeks after the chain put some of its older outlets up for sale, including The Banker’s Draft in Eltham, which was the first Wetherspoon in southeast London when it opened in 1993.

Other pubs up for sale include The Wrong’Un in Bexleyheath and The Capitol in Forest Hill, which was previously put on the market in 2016.
