There are still a large number of people in hospital with Covid-19

Londoners aged 70 and over are now able to book their own coronavirus vaccinations without needing an invitation letter.

Over 1.1 million people in London have already received their first dose of the vaccine, with patients being invited to have the jab. Local breakdowns are not being officially published, but Greenwich Council leader Danny Thorpe said this afternoon that 33,811 residents of his borough had received a jab.

Over-70s who have not had a letter can now book a jab at www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination or by calling 119. Patients are asked for their NHS number, although this is not required.

Appointments can be made at vaccination centres including Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich and Lewisham Hospital, although the jabs are being offered at other sites including GP surgeries and pharmacies.

Yesterday the London Assembly was told that the capital’s target of 1.5 million first doses would be hit by 14 February.

Across the UK, Public Health England figures released today show 10.9 million people have been given a first dose, with over half a million having had both doses. All over-50s are to be offered a jab by May, over-60s are already being called in for jabs.

Covid-19 case rates in Greenwich borough are now down to 277 per 100,000 people, with Lewisham on 259 and Bexley on 237.

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth and Lewisham hospitals, reported 342 people in hospital on Tuesday, with 41 on ventilators.
