A brewery is hoping to raise at least £4,500 for coronavirus relief charities by producing a special beer under the railway arches in Deptford.
Villages Brewery is donating all proceeds from Isolation IPA to the National Emergency Trust’s coronavirus appeal. The trust works with 46 community groups across the UK to support those made most vulnerable by the Covid-19 outbreak, in partnership with the British Red Cross.
The brewery reopens its taproom on Saturday, but has kept brewing through lockdown and the brothers have been delivering beer to local customers instead of serving them in their bar.
Louis Village, who has run the brewery with his brother Archie for four years, said: “We just thought it was a great time for us to brew a beer that would resonate with everyone because we’re all having a shared experience.
“Covid has resulted in people looking a lot closer to home for where they get supplies and from an environmental, social and cultural point of view it makes a lot of sense to enjoy things that are made locally.
“It resonates with people because they can build relationships with the people that are making the things that they’re enjoying.”
So far the brothers have brewed three different 5.4% Isolation IPAs. Louis said the beer they have been delivering straight to people’s homes is the freshest it has ever been – and seeing customers on their doorsteps helped make up for not being able to serve them in the bar. “It’s the community side of things for us, bringing people together is what it’s really about and that’s why we do what we do,” he said.
Now pubs in England are allowed to reopen from tomorrow, Villages will be opening its doors once again – kegging its beers for the first time since lockdown started. “We’re extremely excited to be able to pour some beers down here at the Taproom,” Louis said.
“It’s the thing that I love about this country, the ability to walk into a place and for you to feel like you’ve got roots there, for a lot of us that’s the local pubs.
“We’re very lucky to have those things in our cultural landscape, it’s brilliant for society I think.”
Villages taproom at 21-22 Resolution Way, SE8 4NT is open from noon to 9pm on Saturday and 2pm to 9pm on Sunday. Isolation IPA is available from the brewery or from selected bars and bottle shops. You can still order for delivery at villagesbrewery.com
