The Greenwich & Woolwich MP Matt Pennycook says he is “really pleased” to have been given the role of shadow climate minister in new Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s frontbench team.
Pennycook will work under Ed Miliband, the former Labour leader, who was named shadow business secretary in Starmer’s new team.
“Really pleased to take on the role of Shadow Minister for Climate Change,” he said on social media. “Our immediate focus is ensuring the national coronavirus effort succeeds but we cannot lose sight of climate breakdown and the collective response required this decade to avert runaway global warming.”
Among those to congratulate him was his opponent at the 2015 general election, Conservative councillor Matt Hartley, who said it was “the perfect role for you”.
Pennycook even had congratulations from the band Massive Attack, who tweeted a thumbs-up. “Thank you, no time to lose,” he responded.
Two neighbouring MPs were also given frontbencher roles. Janet Daby, the MP for Lewisham East, said she was “delighted” to become shadow faith minister, while Lewisham Deptford MP Vicky Foxcroft said she was “thrilled” to be appointed shadow minister for disability.
