There’s plenty of competition for the title, but Lovell’s Wharf may well be Greenwich’s worst development site. Not content with having destroyed the riverside path, developers London & Regional Properties now want to have 13-storey tower blocks on the site – similar to the original plans for the site, thrown out some years back.

The developers of the site called Greenwich Wharves are proposing some substantial changes to
the development:

– increasing the total square metres from 94,825 by 12,695 sq.m – anincrease of 30%
– increase the number of new homes from 667 to 911 – about 37% increase
– change in the height of the buildings up to 13 storeys on the riverfront
– reduction in the commercial and office accommodation – no details provided about what or how much is reduced

The commercial and office accommodation were an important factor in the consented plans. Before consent there had been an outrageous original proposal for very tall buildings. The developers now appear to be trying to claw back what they were originally refused.

There are consultation meetings on Tuesday 11th December from 5pm to 9pm, and on Wednesday 12th December from 2pm to 9pm, at Rothbury Hall on Azof Street.

Much of the site was abandoned during the early years of the economic crash, although work is now underway on the second phase of Lovell’s. Nearby, there remains little sign of work on the much-vaunted cruise liner terminal.

  1. 13 Stories, wow !! There seems to be some height consensus (in the past) – if you look around Greenwich and Isle of dogs opposite Greenwich, most buildings top out at 5 stories. But I guess what is a lovely river view compared to yet another carbon copy development – because we need those properties so much !!
    – In fact the new building at Lovells wharf already seems 2 stories too tall – I wish it was easy to look up the plans and understand the impact and how many extra school places are to be provided, increase in utilities like water etc will be factored in. A look at Greenwich Councils website doesn’t offer much info.

  2. Darryl – I think the consultation meetings are in the Stream Arts room which is on the Mauritious Road side of Rothbury Hall

  3. Can I also add – these exhibitions are run by the Developer and are a pre-cursor to the planning applications going in. Once they have submitted a planning application it will go on the Council web site – and eventually turn up at a Planning Meeting. Once the planning application has gone in then residents and others can write in with their comments – and – please – copying to your local councillors.
    I was also going to add that all these issues like water supply and so on all get taken by whichever authority deals with them – Thames Water, for instance, will be asked their views on the application.

  4. It’s a disgrace Lovell’s Wharf developers have monopolised the riverfront path accessibility, and suspicious that Greenwich Council have allowed this to continue for so long (? amount of years?).
    The Thames footpath during the millennium celebrations was accessible and safe, since then Greenwich has allowed it to become vandalised and unsafe, and various parts of it are inaccessible and walkers and cyclists have to navigate around streets that are unpleasant and noisy with traffic. Greenwich Council always want “private investment” involved before they complete a task; they leave projects unfinished everywhere in the borough and in particular west of the Blackwall tunnel. I think cyclists in particular get a raw deal from Greenwich Council.

    The foot-tunnel is another prime example of how inefficient Greenwich Council are – how many more years will that remain partly-finished with the lift facilities un-staffed and the stairwell refurb incomplete? The mayor should at least take a role in re-establishing this prime river-crossing that people have relied upon for over a century,120years in fact.

  5. Looking again at the way they have cut off the Thames path there continues to make my blood boil?! I know its been written about plenty of times but how on earth have they got away with it. Its absolutely shocking.

    I’ve given up walking the Thames Path these days, you never know which part will be open.
