The Greenwich Wire is small, but we pack a punch. We’re the only outlet publishing original local journalism in and for the borough of Greenwich.
We’re published by a community interest company, Flyover Media CIC, and funded by reader contributions, some of which comes from our neighbouring boroughs.
We’re planning to cover the general election count in our home borough, but we know the legacy local media is likely to ignore our neighbours, as they did in 2019. So for one night only, we’re looking to expand, because we think people in those boroughs deserve to be able to read something about their local contests on Friday morning.
We’re looking for experienced journalists who can cover the counts in Bexley (Bexleyheath & Crayford and Old Bexley & Sidcup) and Lewisham (Lewisham North, Lewisham East, Lewisham West & East Dulwich; plus a council by-election in Blackheath) from about 11pm on Thursday, July 4 to 8am on Friday, July 5.
We’ll need you to:
- File a comprehensive round-up of the general election results in that borough, and speak to the winners and (if possible) other leading candidates.
- File photographs of candidates and the count
- File video of the declaration and of the speeches
- Contribute to a live blog
- Be responsible for dealing with the council’s press offices in the lead-up to the count
- Keep in touch with editor Darryl Chamberlain, who will be doing the same at the Greenwich count
- Have press ID and/or personal ID, as the local authorities may require these
As an example, here’s how we recently covered the Lewisham mayoral by-election count.
And we’d like you to:
- Have had experience of reporting general news and covering fast-moving events.
- Have an understanding of the relevant area – know the difference between Bexleyheath and Bexley or Deptford and Downham
- Be familiar with the politics of that borough – this is particularly important for the Bexley seats.
We can pay a total of £320 to cover both your time and your expenses. (We expect the counts will be in Bexleyheath and Downham.)
To apply, please email greenwichwire[at]flyovermedia.london by 11pm on Monday June 17 with a CV and examples of your past work.
