Charlie Davis has been elected to lead Greenwich’s Conservative councillors following Matt Hartley’s decision to step down earlier this month.
The former deputy leader, who represents Eltham Town & Avery Hill, was elected unanimously by his colleagues in the six-strong group.
Luke Warren, a newcomer to the council, will be the new deputy leader. He was elected in Mottingham, Coldharbour & New Eltham ward in May.
Davis was first elected to the council in 2016 after winning a by-election in the old Eltham North seat. He lost his seat in the 2022 election but returned after another by-election two years later.
He said it was an “honour” to take over as Conservative leader from Hartley, who oversaw the party winning two more seats in May.
“I’m incredibly lucky to take over a stronger, bigger group following our gains at the last election, which were made possible by the hard work and determination of our outgoing leader, Matt Hartley,” he said.
“He leaves strong foundations to build upon over the next few years. I’m looking forward to getting started, setting out our priorities for the borough and showing residents that there is a positive Conservative alternative at the town hall.”
Hartley said earlier this month that it “felt like the natural moment for me to step back and make room for others to lead us forward”. He said he had “total confidence” in his successor.
“Charlie Davis is the single most skilled and tenacious campaigner in this borough, and I know he will do an outstanding job for residents as he fights their corner at the town hall,” he said.
