The name of Woolwich’s new leisure centre has been revealed after more than 3,000 people took part in an online vote held by Greenwich Council.

The £115 million centre, which will replace the Waterfront, will open later this year, with  two swimming pools, water slides, a gym across two levels, and a health suite with a spa and sauna.

Woolwich Waves will also host a five-a-side football pitch, sports courts, a creche, a cafe, and a soft play and party space.

More than 1,000 votes were cast in the first 24 hours of the vote last month, with a total of 3,525. Woolwich Waves took 66.3 per cent of the vote, with Woolwich Active on 26 per cent and Move Woolwich on 7.7 per cent.

The Greenwich Wire recorded 530 clicks through to the vote in the 36 hours after it published a news story about it.

Water slides are being installed and the final solar panel has been put in place on the roof of the the 12,800m sq, three-storey building.

A council spokesperson said: “It will be a brilliant venue unlike any other in the capital and it is fitting that residents have played a key role in naming it.

“The name points to the excellent swimming pools that residents will soon be able enjoy, and no doubt the waves that will be created by those sliding down the iconic flumes that pay homage to the Waterfront Leisure Centre that so many of us have fond memories of.”
