Toby Jones and Meera Syal will be among the stars featuring in an immersive theatre production in an old warehouse at Convoys Wharf.

Storehouse, which also stars Kathryn Hunter and Billy Howle and features music from Anna Meredith, will “redefine the boundaries of theatre”, its producers promise.

The performance will take place in the Deptford Storehouse, off New King Street in Deptford, inside the old newsprint yard that has been awaiting redevelopment for more than a decade.

The four actors will be among those providing voices for the show.

“Immersed in an underworld of knowledge, audiences will explore a vast, ever-shifting digital archive, stored by an underground collective—where every news story, message, and meme ever shared has been meticulously preserved,” a spokesperson for the production said.

“Challenging how we perceive truth, trust and the narratives that shape our world, this groundbreaking production is set to redefine immersive theatre, leaving audiences questioning our digital age. This isn’t just a show, it is a call to action.”

The production marks the debut from Sage & Jester, a theatre company led by Liana Patarkatsishvili and including Donacadh O’Briain, who helped develop Operation Mincemeat into a West End hit, the writer and designer Caro Murphy and Katie Lyons, one of writers of Peaky Blinders

Convoys Wharf is still awaiting redevelopment more than 10 years after plans were approved by Boris Johnson Image: Hutchison Property Group

Convoys Wharf, on the border of Lewisham and Greenwich boroughs, is on the site of the old Deptford royal dockyard, which lasted from the 16th century to 1869. The land was later a cattle market before becoming a newsprint yard for Rupert Murdoch’s media empire until 1999.

The land was bought for redevelopment but has sat largely disused for more than 25 years. A decade ago, Lewisham Council was accused of taking too long to approve proposals for redevelopment, and Boris Johnson, the London mayor at the time, approved outlines for 3,500 homes there. But little has happened since then, despite detailed plans for the first three out of 21 blocks being rubber-stamped by Lewisham councillors five years ago. The Deptford Storehouse venue is a 9,000-square metre warehouse on the site.

Storehouse runs from June 4 to September 20. Tickets start from £27.50 and are available from sageandjester.com/storehouse.

Amended at 12.55pm to make clear that the actors are providing voiceovers.
