New designs for Deptford High Street have been revealed by Lewisham Council, which plans to ban cars from most of the shopping area every day of the week.
At present the part of the high street is closed three days each week so markets can be held. Lewisham now plans to pedestrianise the road between New Cross Road and Hamilton Street for set hours seven days a week, encompassing the area around the station and Deptford Market Yard as well as the traditional market area.
Locals, visitors and traders are being asked about the hours during a consultation. The council says it will develop solutions for businesses affected by the expanded pedestrian-only area, while there will be exemptions available.
New seating, greenery and safety features all the way from New Cross Road to Creek Road will be incorporated into the designs for the street, which it says will be easier to keep clean.
The council says the high street will be a “welcoming, greener, safer and an even better place to trade and do business” after the works are completed.

Louise Krupski, Lewisham’s cabinet member for environment, transport and climate action, said: “We want to work with the community at every stage to make sure our improvements are designed by and for local people while ensuring no one is left behind.
“With over 60 per cent of Lewisham residents using public transport for commuting, and many walking or cycling as part of their daily routines, we’re focusing on making it easier for them to travel actively, safely and sustainably while also creating more space for people to enjoy what the high street has to offer.”
Full details of the plans and the consultation are on the Commonplace website. The consultation lasts until May 14.
