Parkrun could be coming to the Greenwich Peninsula later this year – but volunteers are needed to get it off the ground.
There are 65 of the free 5k runs across London, including four in Greenwich borough and one just across the river from the peninsula, at Royal Victoria Dock.
Each event is run by volunteers, welcoming people who run or walk the course each Saturday morning. One of those volunteers is a tailwalker, who ensures that no participant finishes last.
A 5k route using the Thames Path around the O2 has been sketched out, and Knight Dragon, the main developer on the Greenwich Peninsula, is backing the plan.
Parkrun is now looking for people who can form a core team to take on the running of the event and help start it off. Parkrun regulars who know how the events work are particularly welcome, but those with all levels of experience are welcome.
Linda Boscic, who helped set up Charlton Parkrun and is now an area ambassador for the organisation, told The Greenwich Wire: “Parkrun is an opportunity to walk or run with others from your local community, staying active and healthy and making new friends.
“Without volunteers, the events wouldn’t happen, and this is a chance to build a community where everyone is welcome. We have some interest already, but we need some more people to help us get the event up and running.”

Drop-in sessions for anyone interested will be held at the Caspino café at Upper Riverside, close to North Greenwich Pier and the proposed start line for the event, at 11.30am on Saturday March 29 and 7pm on Thursday April 3.
Anyone interested can contact Linda Boscic on GPparkrun[at]gmail.com.

Parkrun coming to the Greenwich Peninsula would bring the number of events in the borough to five, a number matched only by Bromley.
Avery Hill was the first in the borough, back in 2012, and was followed by Sutcliffe and Charlton in 2021, and Thames Path, Woolwich in May 2023. Others close to the peninsula include Victoria Dock and Southwark.
