Posters with designs based on seating moquettes are to be used to cover up the “ghost” marks that have appeared at Elizabeth Line stations in central London.
Within 18 months of the railway’s opening, “shadows” of past passengers appeared behind benches on platforms at Liverpool Street, Farringdon, Tottenham Court Road and Bond Street. Passengers had been leaning back against the platform walls, damaging the surface and leaving the eerie marks.
After trialling several options last year, TfL is now installing the colourful designs at the four stations to protect the platform walls.
TfL says the designs will also give a better indication of priority seating for those waiting for trains.

Howard Smith, the line’s director, said: “The Elizabeth line has had a transformational effect since opening, providing new, accessible journey options for customers, including at new central London stations. These stylish new moquette-inspired designs will enhance the customer experience by protecting the areas behind the seats.”
