Halifax branches in Woolwich, Eltham and Bexleyheath will close in October as part of a round of cutbacks at Lloyds Banking Group.

In total, 136 branches of Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland will close, with the company saying this was because more of its customers were using apps and online banking rather than visiting branches,

Earlier this month, Lloyds announced that its three banks would effectively begin sharing branches in the near future, so a Halifax customer could visit a Lloyds branch and vice versa.

The Woolwich branch will close on October 1, the Bexleyheath branch will close in October 23 and the Eltham branch will close on October 29.

Both Woolwich and Bexleyheath will still have Lloyds branches, but the group will no longer be represented in Eltham, where just Nationwide and Santander will remain.

In central London, Halifax branches in the Strand and Cannon Street will close in May.

Lloyds has said that customers can also carry out their banking at Post Office branches. They can also use Banking Hubs, though there is just one in southeast London, in Welling. Another Banking Hub, in Sidcup, is due to fully open by September.

Last week it was confirmed that WH Smith is to close its Woolwich branch after its lease expired, with the Post Office looking for a new home. The chain announced at the weekend that it is now looking to offload its entire high street estate to focus on more lucrative airport and railway station shops.
