The Greenwich Peninsula could get its own radio studio – with a pair of glowing eyes that can pulse in time to the music – if plans submitted to the council are approved.

Loose FM, which began in a basement in Hoxton three years ago, plans to move to the Design District next to North Greenwich station.

The station would broadcast from a converted shipping container which would also host public events and live shows, with planters and seats moved from other parts of the Design District.

Loose FM’s website says it is “is a London radio community with a love for eclectic, experimental, ecstatic sound and culture”. In an interview with the London in Bits newsletter in 2021, the online station was described as aiming to “reflect a very open-minded appreciation of dance music”.

A studio and green room would be created, while the building would feature glowing eyes that would “come alive with colourful, playful, lighting effects that can interact with the music being played within the studio”. The studio would be in use from 8am to 11pm.

Last year plans were submitted for a padel club to occupy the site; permission was granted in January but nothing came of the proposal.

The Design District opened in 2021 and is billed as “London’s only permanent, purpose-built workplace for the creative industries”. The Greenwich Peninsula developer, Knight Dragon, says it has over  1800 creative tenants and co-working members.

Loose FM would not be the first radio station to base itself in a new development in southeast London. In Thamesmead, RTM – no relation to the station of the same name that operated there in the Nineties – puts out “community-produced culture, debate, art and music” from a studio in Cygnet Square.

More details about the Loose FM proposals are on the Greenwich Council planning website.
