Services through Greenwich, Blackheath, Charlton and Eltham will be hit by engineering works on both National Rail and the DLR this weekend – affecting plans for locals, visitors and football fans attending The Valley.
Work on the line near Slade Green will mean no trains through Eltham or Bexleyheath all weekend, with limited services through Greenwich and Blackheath. Buses will run between Plumstead and Dartford, Southeastern has confirmed.
Passengers trying to reach central London from Greenwich will have to rely on a half-hourly service to Cannon Street, with separate works on the Docklands Light Railway meaning its trains will run to Stratford rather than Bank.
Fans trying to reach The Valley from central London for Charlton Athletic’s match against Stockport County will need to use half-hourly trains from either Victoria or Cannon Street to Charlton; those coming from Kent will face much more difficult journeys.

No Thameslink trains will run into SE London, but half-hourly trains will still run between Dartford and Rainham in Kent.
Cannon Street station will be closed on Sunday, meaning the limited Greenwich line service will start from London Bridge that day.
Normal services are running on Southeastern Metro routes via Lee, Mottingham, New Eltham and Sidcup, as well as on the Jubilee Line and Elizabeth Line.
National Rail services this weekend:
- Half-hourly Southeastern Metro trains between Cannon Street and Plumstead via London Bridge, Deptford, Greenwich, Maze Hill, Westcombe Park, Charlton, Woolwich Dockyard, Woolwich Arsenal. (Service starts from London Bridge on Sunday.)
- Half-hourly Southeastern Metro trains between Victoria and Plumstead via Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Nunhead, Lewisham, Blackheath, Charlton, Woolwich Dockyard, Woolwich Arsenal.
- Buses between Lewisham and Dartford (New Cross and Dartford on Sunday); Plumstead and Dartford.
- Half-hourly Thameslink trains between Dartford and Rainham calling at all stations.
Docklands Light Railway services this weekend:
- No trains to Bank or Tower Gateway; services will run Stratford to Lewisham, Stratford International to Woolwich Arsenal, Poplar to Beckton.
Southeastern also confirmed on Wednesday that 12 extra “rounder” trains will run in peak times on the Sidcup and Greenwich lines when the timetables change in September.
The trains, which link to the Elizabeth Line at Abbey Wood, were withdrawn by the government-run company in December 2022, but the services have slowly been returning.
However, off-peak and weekend rounder trains and service frequencies have not been restored. Full timetables are on the company’s website.
