Another weekend closure of the southbound Blackwall Tunnel has been confirmed by Transport for London to allow for works on the new Silvertown Tunnel.
The crossing is already due to close this weekend, from 00.01 on Saturday August 17 to 05.00 on Monday August 19.
Now it has been confirmed that the tunnel will also close on the weekend of September 7-9, on the same times.
Northbound traffic will be unaffected, but bus route 108 will be split into two services in both directions; from Lewisham to North Greenwich and Canning Town to Stratford International. Passengers will be able to use the Jubilee Line without charge to cross the river.
This weekend’s closure will affect fans heading to Charlton Athletic’s home match with Leyton Orient, which kicks off at 12.30 on Saturday, as well as West Ham United’s game against Aston Villa.
The Addicks currently have a home match against Rotherham United scheduled for September 7, while Peter Kay is performing at the O2 on the same day.
Drivers are being asked to plan their journeys in advance with delays expected on the A13 and streets around the Rotherhithe Tunnel. The Woolwich Ferry now operates every 15 minutes until 10pm seven days a week.
The closure will allow for more work on the approaches to the Silvertown Tunnel, including road surfacing and safety barrier work, while some work on the Blackwall Tunnel is also planned.

TfL’s Nick Fairholme said: “We are now in the final phase of works to complete the Silvertown Tunnel and these closures will help us to start to get the tunnel ready to open. We appreciate that these planned weekend works will have an impact on some drivers and are doing everything we can to limit potential disruption – including ensuring a northbound route through the Blackwall Tunnel is maintained throughout.”
Last month TfL confirmed its plans for tolling on the Blackwall Tunnel and Silvertown Tunnel, to be introduced when the new crossing opens next year, with charges of up to £4 for rush-hour car and light van drivers.
Tolls have been part of the plan for the controversial tunnel between Greenwich Peninsula and the the Royal Docks since it was first planned more than a decade ago. A consultation is open on the TfL website until September 3.
