The Blackwall Tunnel will be closed southbound on three weeknights later this month to enable more work to take place on the Silvertown Tunnel, which opens next year.
Southbound traffic will be barred from 11pm on June 25, 26 and 27. Only buses on route 108 will be able to head south, with buses being escorted through the tunnel. Normal service will resume from 5am the following morning.
There will also be a weekend-long closure from just after midnight on Saturday 29 June, lasting until 5am on July 1. Over that weekend the 108 will be split into two sections in both directions, with passengers asked to take the Tube between North Greenwich and Canning Town.
Transport for London says the weeknight closures are needed to help reduce the need for more weekend closures later this year as work continues on adjusting the road network to accommodate the new tunnel.
Drivers of HGVs and larger vans are being asked to consider routes away from central London during the closures.
Landscaping work has recently begun on the Greenwich side of the tunnel, while the entrance buildings on both sides of the Thames are expected to be finished soon.
The Silvertown Tunnel is expected to open in about a year’s time, after which time tolls will be introduced on both the new road and the Blackwall Tunnel.
A lane will also be closed overnight on the northbound approach between June 18-22. More details about the closures are on the TfL website.
Amended at 9.35pm to make clarify the number of weeknight closures.
