All-night Elizabeth Line services will come to Woolwich and Abbey Wood this New Year’s Eve – the first 24-hour Crossrail service since the railway opened 19 months ago.

Special services will run between Abbey Wood, Maidenhead and Reading, providing a train about every 15 minutes through Woolwich. Trains will also run between Hayes & Harlington and Shenfield.

Most Tube services will also run all night, while the Docklands Light Railway will run every 15 minutes in the small hours of New Year’s Day. Extra buses will run on many routes, although details of these have not been confirmed.

But passengers hoping for a revival of the free TfL fares they enjoyed before the pandemic will be disappointed – there will be no free New Year’s Eve travel.

On the mainline, Southeastern Metro services are due to run every half an hour from Charing Cross on the Bexleyheath and Sidcup lines, as well as on the routes to Hayes and Orpington. Half-hourly trains will also run from Cannon Street on the Greenwich & Woolwich line. Services will start to wind down after 2am. However, short-notice industrial action could affect those services.

London Overground trains will run all night between Highbury & Islington and New Cross.

…but watch out for engineering works

TfL released details of its festive services last week, and is warning passengers to check before they travel because of engineering work. No Elizabeth Line services will run at all on Boxing Day, while there will be no service between Ealing Broadway and Paddington between December 24 and 27, affecting journeys to and from Heathrow.

There will also be no service between Bank/Tower Gateway and Poplar/Canary Wharf on the DLR between December 27-30, with the line also affected by engineering work on Boxing Day.

Many services will wind down early on Christmas Eve with no services at all on Christmas Day.

There also major engineering works affecting Southeastern Metro services into Victoria across the Christmas period, with services via Bexleyheath, Eltham and Lewisham running into Charing Cross instead.

On the roads, ULEZ will be suspended on Christmas Day only while the central London congestion charge will not be in operation between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Andy Lord, London’s transport commissioner, said; “The majority of London’s transport network will remain open over the festive season to help everyone make the most of the city, but customers are asked to check before they travel as some essential planned works will be taking place. We will be welcoming everyone with cheer and do all we possibly can to ensure that they can travel safely and smoothly.”
