Transport for London plans to install a new pedestrian crossing at one of Greenwich’s busiest junctions after years of campaigning from locals.
A pelican crossing will be placed at the junction of Blackheath Hill with Lewisham Road outside the George and Dragon pub, as well as across the slip road from Greenwich Church Street.
At present there is no light-controlled crossing for pedestrians, who have to take their chances by judging the traffic on the A2.
TfL has launched a consultation and hopes to have the crossing in place by the end of next year.
The proposals would mean a no right-turn from Lewisham Road into Blackheath Hill for traffic. TfL says it is only installing a crossing on one arm of the junction because adding one to all four arms would “would result in disproportionate delays to traffic”.

“We are therefore proposing a new pedestrian crossing only at the point where most people want to cross the road,” TfL says. “We hope that this will improve the situation as currently the junction has no light controlled crossings for pedestrians.”
A public exhibition will be held at West Greenwich Library on Thursday October 5 from 3pm to 7pm. The consultation can be found at haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/a2-greenwich-south-street.
