Artists are being asked to come up with ideas for four new murals in Woolwich town centre after Greenwich Council announced plans for an arts trail around its main shopping street.
The council says it wants to “bring the history of local people alive” with a two-year culture and arts project,with £74,500 from Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Greenwich-based Emergency Exit Arts will be running the arts programme, while the Hackney-based architects Turner Works will be commissioning the murals.
The murals are planned for the hoardings at the DLR station facing the Powis St/Greens End junction, the new Job Centre shop front, Barnard Close and Myrtle Alley.
Turner Works is the company behind the controversial Pop Brixton market and Peckham Levels.
It also was behind aborted plans for a street food market, Wool Yard, which would have been behind the Iceland store on Powis Street. Plans were approved in 2017 but the market – which would have been open for five years – never materialised.
Adel Khaireh, the council’s cabinet member for culture, said: “Our cultural programme will celebrate the diverse stories of our communities in Woolwich and delve more intimately into the lives and experiences of our community, showing just how connected we all are.
“I can’t wait to see how local artists will also creatively reinterpret the local people’s stories to build a trail that is immersive, captivating and real.”

This weekend is also the last chance for local residents to comment on plans to revamp Powis Street and Beresford Square with millions of pounds of government money.
