One of Greenwich’s busiest stretches of Thames Path is closed for four months from today so stretches of river wall can be repaired.
The stretch between Wood Wharf and Cutty Sark Gardens, which gives tourists easy access to the businesses to the west of the town centre, has been closed by the Environment Agency as part of its Deptford Walls project to help protect flood defences.
Both pedestrians and cyclists will face upheaval with the closure of what is part of major walking and cycling routes until the end of September.
Pedestrians will need to divert via Welland Street, through the centre of the Meridian Estate, while cyclists are being asked to use busy Creek Road.
The Environment Agency says the closure, which is already four weeks behind schedule, is required so construction vehicles can access the river wall, which is cracked from historic tree growth.
It adds that a summer closure is needed so mortar and concrete can set quickly before the tide comes in.
