Woolwich Road roundabout
Traffic can still head north onto the A102 from Woolwich Road

Plans to cut access to the Blackwall Tunnel approach from the Angerstein roundabout are still going ahead as part of a scheme to make the A206 safer for cyclists to use, Transport for London has said.

The northbound slip road from the Woolwich Road was due to be closed to most traffic with the opening of a segregated cycle route along the road and across the roundabout, where two cyclists died in 11 years. The aim was to reduce traffic using the roundabout to make it safer to cross.

While the first phase of the cycle route opened before Christmas, the slip road has stayed open.

TfL says it still plans to close the access to the A102 for all traffic except emergency vehicles, but as part of the second phase of the route – to Anchor and Hope Lane in Charlton.

“We are still planning to close the ramp – we will be doing this as part of the next phase of work,” a spokesperson told 853.

The cycle route runs from one end of east Greenwich to the other along existing side streets from the Old Royal Naval College to Christchurch Way, and then in a segregated lane along Trafalgar Road and Woolwich Road to Farmdale Road, with a signalised crossing under the Woolwich Road flyover.

No date has yet been announced for work to start on the next phase to Charlton, while a further section to Woolwich is currently being covered with wider bus lanes. Eventually, it is anticipated that the route will be part of Cycleway 4, linking Tower Bridge and Woolwich.
