Residential streets in the borough of Greenwich will not be swept because of a “reduction in staff” during the coronavirus epidemic, it told residents today.
Only the borough’s four town centres – Woolwich, Greenwich, Eltham and Plumstead – will be swept by council staff until further notice.
“If you are outdoors for essential reasons only, please help keep our streets clean by using the bins provided and taking rubbish home with you,” read a message on the council’s daily Covid-19 email.
The council’s rubbish and recycling collections have also been affected by the outbreak, with the council appealing to residents to produce as little waste as possible to assist crews. Its reuse and recycling centre in Thamesmead has closed.
Playgrounds, adventure play centres, outdoor gyms, sports courts and skateparks have officially been closed while all council meetings have been cancelled for the next three weeks, including tonight’s meeting which was due to endorse a freeze in the money paid to councillors.
Over 1,300 people have signed up to a council appeal for volunteers to help neighbours during the outbreak.
