Greenwich councillors are to vote on a motion demanding another referendum on the terms of the UK leaving the European Union.

A group of 14 Labour councillors have put forward the motion, which will go to next Wednesday’s full council meeting, calling upon the Government “to allow the citizens of the United Kingdom to have a ‘People’s Vote’ on the final Brexit deal”.

It follows a similar motion being passed by Lewisham Council earlier this month.

On Saturday, 700,000 people marched through central London to demand a new vote ahead of 29 March 2019, when the UK is due to leave.

The motion, which is certain to pass, claims “the public have changed their minds on Brexit – with polling consistently showing that the Government is doing a bad job of negotiating Brexit, the majority of people now support a ‘People’s Vote’ on the final deal”.

Matt Hartley's retweet

It is likely to cause discomfort on among the Conservative opposition on the council, which is split on the issue of the UK leaving the European Union; local Tory leader Matt Hartley has recently doubled-down on his pro-Brexit stance on social media, retweeting one comment from Darren Grimes – an activist fined £20,000 for breaking electoral law in the referendum campaign – calling Saturday’s demonstration “a losers’ march”.

Other motions up before Wednesday’s meeting include a pledge to resist further school academisation and one from Hartley’s Tories calling to Greenwich to adopt the “street map” consultation used by Lewisham in the summer to determine its new transport policy.

To submit your own question to the council meeting, email committees[at] before noon on Wednesday 24 October. Residents can submit up to two questions per meeting.
