East Greenwich’s historic Enderby House is set to become a pub after one of London’s biggest chains applied for a licence to serve alcohol there.
Young’s wants the new pub to be able to serve alcohol from 8am to midnight Mondays to Saturdays, and 8am to 11.30pm on Sunday.
Built in 1846 by the Enderby whaling family, who were immortalised in the book Moby Dick, the Grade II-listed building had fallen into disrepair after being taken over by developer Barratt, which is building housing at Enderby Wharf.
Barratt has been renovating the Thames-side property, although there is currently no public access because of works on the river wall.
Campaigners at the Enderby Group want to see the wharf’s pivotal role in communications history – the first transatlantic cables were loaded there – commemorated at and around the house.
Comments on the licensing application need to be with Greenwich Council by Tuesday 11 September.
Meanwhile, brewery Hop Stuff, which was founded in Woolwich, is applying to open its fourth Taproom venue in the River Gardens development at Lovell’s Wharf, just south of Enderby. It follows successful openings in Woolwich, Deptford, and Ashford, Kent.
A licensing hearing on Thursday 30 August will decide if Taproom SE10 can open in a restaurant unit beneath riverside flats.
However, it faces over 40 objections from local residents as well as a petition. Police want its outdoor areas to be closed at 10pm.
Close by, upmarket grocery chain Simply Fresh also faced objections for an alcohol licence for its soon-to-open store on Banning Street; while the long-established Pelton Arms pub had a long-running battle with noise complaints, believed to have come from one individual.
Another traditional Greenwich venue, the Cutty Sark pub, also run by Young’s, was asked to close its riverside beer garden at 10pm because of noise complaints, according to a police representation about the Taproom.
