A Woolwich residents’ pressure group is holding a meeting this Wednesday to discuss plans to knock down the block of buildings around Spray Street to replace them with 742 new homes, shops, offices, a cinema and a new public square.
Earlier plans for the council-backed Spray Street Quarter had seen some of the older buildings on the site retained, but new designs submitted to Greenwich planning officers see the entire block demolished.
Also set to be demolished will be the Woolwich Public Market, which Street Feast is taking over for two years before redevelopment begins.
Developers Notting Hill Housing and St Modwen plan 35% “affordable” housing on the site – but this breaks down as 15% at social rent (50% of market rent) and a further 20% for shared ownership schemes.
Speak Out Woolwich, which is organising the meeting, calls the proposal “a wasted opportunity to develop the site in a really interesting way, incorporating the best of the existing heritage and buildings and including the proposed new amenities”.
The meeting will be held at 6.30pm on Wednesday 21 February at the Island Business Centre in Wellington Street.
